Kathmandu: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel has reiterated that the government is committed to resolving issues linked with bonded labour in Nepal, a practice that has long been prohibited in the country.

Earlier today, during a meeting at Singhadurbar with representatives of the National Agriculture Bonded Labourer Struggle Committee, Minister Paudel emphasized that the government is preparing concrete plans to address unresolved issues related to the resettlement of freed bonded labourers.

Moreover, he highlighted that the concerns of those affected by uncompleted settlement programs remain a priority. He specifically mentioned groups such as Kamaiya, Kamlari, Harawacharawa, Haliya, and others who have yet to receive full support from the government.

In addition, Minister Paudel assured that the government is serious about providing proper rehabilitation, education, and livelihood support for freed labourers. He noted that authorities are coordinating with local officials and NGOs to implement resettlement plans effectively. This initiative is expected to improve the social and economic conditions of communities affected by bonded labour.

Furthermore, this commitment forms part of Nepal’s broader efforts to eliminate exploitative labour practices and protect human rights. Organizations like Human Rights Watch and the International Labour Organization have consistently urged the government to strengthen policies supporting freed bonded labourers.

Finally, the government encourages affected individuals and communities to participate actively in resettlement programs and seek assistance through local offices. Citizens can learn more about these initiatives on the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security website.
