Talks Between Teachers’ Federation and Government Remain Inconclusive

Minister Pant attends meeting; protests continue despite 85 days of agitation

Kathmandu: The meeting held this morning between the Nepal Teachers’ Federation and the government ended without any conclusion.

The dialogue took place at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in Singha Durbar in the presence of Minister Raghuji Pant. However, Gangaram Tiwari, Chairperson of the Nepal School Staff Council, who was present at the meeting, confirmed that the talks failed to reach any agreement.

“We are still in formal dialogue and discussions. No conclusion has been reached yet,” said Tiwari. “A resolution will come only after the ministry clearly responds to the demands we submitted.”

He stated that it is not the right time to call off the protests but remained hopeful that a solution would emerge in the coming days. According to Tiwari, a way forward can only be considered after the School Education Bill is presented in Parliament and key demands such as grade promotions and issues of protocol—are addressed through a cabinet decision.

In today’s meeting, the protesting Teachers’ Federation presented their list of demands to Minister Pant. However, the ministry has not yet made any concrete commitments. Both parties agreed to continue the dialogue.

Today marks the 85th day of the teachers’ protest, and it has been 25 days since they began the education strike and street demonstrations in Kathmandu. Despite growing concern over the prolonged disruption to public education, the government’s efforts to address the demands have yet to produce consensus due to the teachers’ firm stance.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court had ordered the government to resolve the issue and resume teaching within three days.
