Indian Ministry Expresses Condolences Over Death of Nepali Student in Odisha

India assures full cooperation and safety commitment after Nepali student Prisa Shah’s death at KIIT.

Kathmandu: India’s Ministry of External Affairs has expressed deep condolences over the death of Prisa Shah, a Nepali student studying at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha. In a press statement issued on Friday, the ministry conveyed sympathy to Shah’s family and said it is in constant contact with the Odisha state government.

“This tragic incident has been taken seriously from the moment it was reported. The state government is providing full assistance to the bereaved family, and a detailed investigation is underway,” the statement read. The Indian government reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all international students studying in the country.

Shah, an 18-year-old from Birgunj, was a first-year undergraduate student. After news of her death surfaced, senior police officers and a forensic team visited KIIT. Her body was taken to a hospital, with authorities stating that the post-mortem would be conducted after her father’s arrival.

This incident follows a similar tragedy earlier this year, when another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, died at the same university. Lamsal had reportedly filed repeated complaints of mental harassment by a male student, but received no support from the institution, leading to her death.
