Kathmandu: On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2025, President Ramchandra Paudel called for courageous and responsible journalism, expressing hope that Nepal’s media will continue to exercise its constitutional rights fearlessly and with integrity.

Press Freedom: Cornerstone of Nepal’s Democracy

In a statement issued on Friday, the President praised the role of Nepali journalists in ending autocracy and establishing the federal democratic republic. He described press freedom as both a journalistic right and a citizen’s right to information.

“A free and fair press is the foundation of democracy,” the statement read. “Nepali media has played a major role in all democratic movements. Strong, neutral, and independent journalism makes democracy stronger.”

Combating Misinformation and Ensuring Accountability

President Paudel highlighted the critical role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability within the governance system. He urged journalists to verify facts and uphold ethical standards, especially at a time when misinformation spreads rapidly through social media.

Press as a Bridge Between State and Citizens

Calling for journalism that supports economic transformation, the President encouraged the media to guide Nepal’s journey from political reform to economic development.

“Let the press continue to act as a bridge between the state and the people,” he said,“ensuring that all three organs of the state remain alert, accountable, and transparent.”

Marking World Press Freedom Day, the President reaffirmed his support for a free, independent, and ethical media landscape in Nepal. He emphasized that only through strong journalism can democratic values thrive and citizens stay informed and empowered.
