New Delhi: India has enforced an India-Pakistan trade ban, immediately halting all imports originating from or transiting through Pakistan. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued the notification on May 2, citing national security and public policy concerns.
This decision follows the tragic Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. Indian authorities have attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, though Pakistan has denied involvement.
Scope and Impact of the Trade Ban
The DGFT notification specifies that the trade ban applies to all goods from Pakistan, including those shipped through indirect routes. India’s government says the measure is necessary to address cross-border terrorism and protect national security.
The ban has affected several sectors, including textiles, chemicals, and agricultural products. Additionally, increased security measures are now in place along the Line of Control, and tourist resorts in affected areas remain temporarily closed.
Pakistan Responds to the India-Pakistan Trade Ban
Pakistan has taken reciprocal measures, suspending trade routes, restricting airspace for Indian carriers, and expelling Indian diplomats. These actions have further strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The international community has called for restraint, urging both nations to engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
