New Delhi: In a decisive move reflecting escalating tensions with Pakistan, India has announced an immediate ban on all imports originating from or transiting through Pakistan. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification on May 2, citing national security and public policy concerns as the rationale behind this action.

This development follows the tragic events of April 22, when a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists. Indian authorities have attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, a claim that Islamabad has categorically denied.

The DGFT’s directive explicitly states that, effective immediately, the import of all goods from Pakistan is prohibited, encompassing both direct and indirect routes. This measure is part of a broader strategy to address security threats and assert India’s stance against cross-border terrorism.

In response to India’s actions, Pakistan has undertaken reciprocal measures, including the suspension of trade routes, closure of airspace to Indian carriers, and the expulsion of Indian diplomats. These steps have further strained the already fragile relations between the two nations.

The Pahalgam attack has also led to heightened security protocols within the region, with numerous tourist resorts temporarily closed and increased military presence along the Line of Control. The international community has expressed concern over the potential for further escalation and has called for restraint from both sides.
