Minister Paudel: Nepal Faces Health Worker Retention Crisis, Not Shortage

Despite producing adequate healthcare professionals, Nepal struggles to retain them, especially outside Kathmandu, says Health Minister Pradeep Paudel.

Kathmandu: Nepal’s Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel has claimed that the country does not lack healthcare professionals. Speaking at the 23rd anniversary of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) at Bir Hospital on Tuesday, he said the real challenge lies in retaining them.

Minister Paudel pointed out that although Kathmandu has enough health workers, rural areas suffer from a serious shortage. He cited an example where a federal hospital has nine sanctioned posts but only one doctor is working.

He emphasized the need to retain medical personnel within Nepal. “We must ensure health workers are willing to serve in remote regions,” he said. For this, the production and deployment process should be simplified.

Minister Paudel also shared that if the insurance system recommended by the Health Ministry is implemented, citizens will receive quality services at lower costs. He said this year’s government policy and program includes new health initiatives.

Additionally, he mentioned that the government has expanded cancer treatment services to all seven provinces. Transplant services are also being extended across the country.

Minister Paudel stressed that a 4% health budget is insufficient if the state truly prioritizes healthcare. He also shared that the budget includes a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing a new hospital building in Duwakot under Bir Hospital.

He concluded by saying that although Nepal produces quality health professionals, retaining them is difficult. The government must now focus on addressing this issue seriously.
