UML MP Ishwar Bahadur Rijal Questions Former King Gyanendra’s Silence on Nepal’s New Map
Rijal also urges RPP to change its name and fully adopt republican values.

Kathmandu: UML lawmaker Ishwar Bahadur Rijal questioned former King Gyanendra Shah for remaining silent when Nepal released its updated map. The new map includes Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura, areas claimed by Nepal.
Speaking during Wednesday’s House of Representatives session, Rijal addressed the government’s policy and program. He reminded the parliament how the entire nation stood united when the map was unveiled. However, he pointed out that the former monarch—who often comments during minor events—did not release any statement during that crucial moment.
“When Nepal included Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura in the national map, the entire country raised its voice. Yet, former King Gyanendra, who makes statements on full moons and new moons, stayed silent,” Rijal said.
Rijal also addressed the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP). He urged the party to let go of the monarchy agenda and fully embrace Nepal’s republican system.
Recalling the political shift in 2046 BS, he thanked past RPP leaders for accepting multiparty democracy. He said their decision to rename the party as Rastriya Prajatantra Party showed their support for change.
“I thank RPP leaders of the time for accepting change. They named the party accordingly, and it still exists today by acknowledging that transformation,” he said.
Rijal suggested that the party now reflect its republican stance more clearly. He recommended adding the term “Republican” to its official name.
“Why not rename it ‘Republican RPP’? Accepting and embracing change is necessary,” Rijal added. He even proposed a new name: ‘Rastriya Sanghiya Loktantrik Ganatantrik Party’ (National Federal Democratic Republican Party).
