Bhaktapur: The vibrant Sindoor Jatra, a key part of the Biska (Bisket) Festival, was celebrated with traditional fervor in Madhyapur Thimi, Bhaktapur. The annual event marks the beginning of the New Year and is known for its unique celebration involving color, music, and devotion.
As per tradition, processional chariots (khats) carrying the idols of deities from 32 different neighborhoods are brought to the Balkumari Temple. Once all the deities arrive, the Sindoor Jatra officially begins.
Devotees, accompanied by traditional instruments like Dhime, Bhusya, and Khaya Baja, carry the deity chariots through various streets and alleys, smearing each other with Sindoor (vermilion powder) in a jubilant display of faith and celebration. Homes along the route welcome the procession with flower petals, abir (color powder), and oil lamps from balconies, rooftops, and windows.
Leading the procession are deities from local temples including Balkumari, Dakshin Barahi, Vishnuvir, Siddhikali, Siddhi Ganesh (Nagadesh), Mahalaxmi (Bode), and Nilbarahi (Tigni).
Sindoor Jatra showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Newar community and remains one of the most visually stunning and spiritually profound festivals in the Kathmandu Valley.
