Over 400 Rescued as Devastating Quake Strikes Tibet

In the wake of a powerful earthquake that struck the Tibetan plateau early Tuesday morning, emergency responders have successfully rescued over 400 individuals from the rubble of collapsed buildings and landslides. The quake, registering a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale, has caused widespread devastation in the region, leaving thousands displaced and dozens still unaccounted for.
The earthquake’s epicenter was reported to be near Nyingchi, a city in southeastern Tibet known for its mountainous terrain and traditional architecture. The tremor, which occurred at 4:32 AM local time, was followed by several aftershocks, further complicaating rescue operations.Preliminary reports indicate that the quake has led to significant structural damage, with roads, bridges, and communication networks severely affected. Traditional Tibetan buildings, many made of stone and wood, have been particularly vulnerable to the tremors, with entire villages reduced to rubble.
Local and international rescue teams, including China’s National Emergency Response Force, have been working tirelessly to save those trapped under debris. Helicopters and heavy machinery have been deployed to the region, where challenging terrain has made ground access difficult.“The scale of destruction is immense,” said Lobsang Tsering, a local official overseeing the rescue operations. “Our priority is to locate and save as many people as possible while providing immediate medical aid to the injured.”
Field hospitals have been set up to treat survivors, and emergency shelters are being provided for those left homeless. Volunteers and aid organizations are also distributing food, water, and blankets to affected families.
