Powerful Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaving Over 120 Dead and Thousands Displaced

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Tibetan region on January 7, 2025, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The epicenter was located in Tingri County, near the base of Mount Everest, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake has claimed at least 126 lives and left 188 injured, while thousands have been displaced after over 3,600 homes were destroyed. Rescue operations are ongoing, with more than 3,400 personnel deployed to search for survivors amid harsh winter conditions, as temperatures in the region have dropped to -18°C.
The tremors were felt across neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of India, causing panic and evacuations in cities like Kathmandu. Concerns have been raised about the structural safety of hydropower projects in the seismically active Himalayan region, with reports of damage to multiple reservoirs and dams.
