Kathmandu – Following the deadly Pahalgam attack in Jammu & Kashmir, which killed 26 people including Nepali citizen Sudip Neupane, India has announced several strong retaliatory measures against Pakistan. The Indian Cabinet met Wednesday evening and also scheduled an all-party meeting on Thursday to discuss further actions.

India’s Key Decisions After the Pahalgam Attack

India’s Cabinet approved five major actions following the attack:

  • Termination of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.

  • Closure of the Attari border crossing and a 48-hour evacuation directive for Pakistani nationals.

  • Immediate cancellation of all Pakistani visas issued by India.

  • One-week deadline for Pakistani defense advisors at the High Commission in New Delhi to leave.

  • Reduction of staff at the Pakistani High Commission from 55 to 30 members.

Indus Waters Treaty and Its Implications

Signed on September 19, 1960, under World Bank mediation, the Indus Waters Treaty governs water distribution from six rivers of the Indus basin. India’s cancellation could impact Pakistan’s agriculture, water supply, and industries, signaling a major shift in regional geopolitics.

Investigation and Suspects

The attack targeted tourists in Pahalgam’s scenic Baisaran Valley. Indian intelligence agencies suspect The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy. Three suspects—Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha—have been identified, and the NIA is leading the investigation.
