Kathmandu: Former President of Nepal, Bidya Devi Bhandari, has extended heartfelt greetings to all Nepalis at home and abroad on the auspicious occasion of New Year 2082, expressing her wish for peace, prosperity, and progressive growth for the nation and its people.

In a New Year message, Bhandari called on all citizens to transform this year into a historic turning point—one that opens doors to national prosperity while learning from past misunderstandings, disappointments, and systemic barriers. “This New Year must become a year of renewed hope, of strong determination, and of meaningful change,” she said.

Reflecting on Nepal’s prolonged struggle against feudal oppression, she noted that remnants of injustice and inequality still exist and must be addressed. She emphasized that despite the sacrifices of the people for justice, dignity, and development, expected progress has not materialized due to systemic inertia and leadership shortcomings.

Bhandari voiced deep concern about increasing youth migration, rising unemployment, and the stagnation in industrial development. “When we cannot create opportunities at home and force our youth to leave with tears in their eyes, it reflects a serious national failure,” she stated.

She also stressed the need to modernize agriculture, expand industries, and make the civil service more accountable and people-focused. At the same time, she expressed concern that Nepal’s unique culture, identity, and values are under threat due to ongoing socio-political challenges.

Time for Honest Introspection

Bhandari called for honest self-reflection instead of sympathy-seeking rhetoric, questioning why the socio-economic transformation promised under the federal democratic republic has not yet been realized.

“We have changed systems and constitutions in the name of solving people’s problems. But have we truly changed their lives?” she asked, urging political forces to go beyond personal ambition and serve with integrity.

She highlighted the need for the implementation of progressive ideologies, especially the principles of People’s Multiparty Democracy envisioned by late leader Madan Bhandari. She said this doctrine is not just a political instrument, but a blueprint for uplifting people’s living standards and strengthening national pride.

A Call for Leadership and Action

Bhandari urged the CPN-UML, the party that carries Madan Bhandari’s legacy, to take prompt and concrete action plans to regain public trust and lead the nation forward with sincerity and speed.

“No priority is higher than national interest. No joy is greater than putting a smile on the faces of the people,” she emphasized, urging all leaders to dedicate their time and energy to the service of the nation.

Ending her message, Bhandari said, “Let this New Year light the lamp of hope and open the gates of prosperity. May we all come together with fresh determination to make 2082 a year of meaningful contribution to the country.”
