PM Oli Urges Protesting Teachers to Return to Dialogue, End Strike

Kathmandu: The ongoing Nepal teachers protest has prompted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to call on striking educators to return to talks. He assured teachers that all feasible demands would be addressed and urged them to resume academic duties to prevent further school disruptions.
PM Oli Urges Dialogue Amid Nepal Teachers Protest
Speaking at a public event in Kathmandu, Oli said, “Please come for talks immediately, settle the matter, reach an agreement, and return. That is my sincere request.” He stressed that the government welcomes teachers’ concerns and is committed to fulfilling what is possible.
Impact of Nepal Teachers Protest on Education
The Teachers’ Federation began protests on Chaitra 20 (April 2), demanding the enactment of the School Education Act and other reforms. Then, on Chaitra 25 (April 6), they launched a nationwide school strike. Consequently, student admissions, SEE answer sheet evaluations, and other academic activities have faced major disruptions.
Highlighting the consequences, Oli stated, “This protest benefits no one. Students are suffering, and parents are distressed.” Moreover, he questioned the federation’s reluctance to hold formal talks: “I’ve heard they don’t want official dialogue—what kind of protest is that?”
Government Efforts and Current Status
Despite several meetings with PM Oli, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, and Education Minister Bidya Bhattarai, the government has not reached an agreement. Today marks the 20th consecutive day of the Nepal teachers protest. Therefore, authorities face growing pressure to act swiftly.
