Madrid/Lisbon: Spain and Portugal have declared states of emergency following widespread power outages that left millions without electricity. According to CNN, the disruption has paralyzed traffic lights, halted rail services, and closed airports, throwing daily life into chaos across both countries.
The exact cause of the blackout remains unknown.
Immediate Emergency Meetings Held
With a combined population of around 60 million, both nations convened emergency meetings to formulate rapid response strategies. Portugal’s grid operator confirmed the outage began shortly after noon. France also experienced partial outages, although electricity was restored there within a few hours, reported AFP.
Leaders Respond to the Crisis
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the cause of the massive power failure is still unclear but assured that efforts to resolve the issue are ongoing. Meanwhile, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro officially declared an energy crisis, noting that restoring full supply is proving “complicated.”
“The impact is massive even though the cause remains unknown,” CNN reported. In Madrid, traffic jams stretched for miles after traffic lights went dark.
European Council President and former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa said that while the exact cause remains uncertain, there is currently no evidence of a cyberattack.
