Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has strongly criticized the indifferent attitude of educators following the shocking failure of over 52% of students in this year’s Secondary Education Examination (SEE). Speaking at a program marking National Information and Communication Technology Day in Kathmandu, Oli said that such a high failure rate should have triggered alarm among teachers—not apathy.

He recounted overhearing a teacher on social media who dismissed the outcome, saying a 48% pass rate was “good enough.” Oli responded sharply, “That mentality is damaging. These are our nation’s bright minds, and their futures are being written off as early as grade 10.”

A Symptom of Deeper Problems

Oli, who is also chairman of the CPN-UML, emphasized that the failure rate doesn’t just reflect student performance—it signals systemic gaps in teaching quality, student guidance, and lack of serious intervention. He added that many students, especially from remote regions, face additional challenges and deserve proper counseling and support.

Nepali Youth Are Capable, But Unsupported

“Nepali students are incredibly talented,” Oli remarked. “They come from tough conditions and still perform well—what they lack is opportunity, not intelligence.”
