Banke School Uniform Issue: CDO Warns Against Cross-Border Purchases
Parents Raise Concerns Over Cross-Border Deals

Nepalgunj: The Chief District Officer (CDO) of Banke, Dharma Raj Joshi, has issued a strict warning regarding the Banke school uniform issue, cautioning private schools not to send students to India for uniforms. Parents recently reported questionable “setting” deals between schools and Indian vendors, prompting this action.
Legal Action for Schools Ignoring the Ban
During a program organized by the Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Joshi stated that any school forcing students or parents to buy uniforms from India will face legal consequences. “Sending students across the border for uniforms is a punishable offense. Offenders will be taken into custody by the District Police Office,” he emphasized.
Supporting Local Businesses
Moreover, Joshi highlighted that purchasing from Indian markets, even for basic items, harms the local economy. He stressed that promoting local purchases strengthens Nepal’s economy and benefits small businesses. Consequently, schools are now expected to prioritize local suppliers for uniforms and stationery.
Common Uniform Proposal to Reduce Dependence
To tackle the issue comprehensively, Joshi proposed a unified school uniform design for all private schools in Banke. This approach would reduce reliance on cross-border vendors and encourage local garment producers.
Tank Dhami, President of the Chamber of Commerce, further alleged that some school operators earn commissions by pushing students to buy Indian products. Therefore, he urged schools to support local suppliers, noting that they provide better quality at affordable prices.
Border Checks and Anti-Smuggling Measures
Finally, the uniform crackdown is part of a broader anti-smuggling initiative. Joshi has instructed border officials at Jamunaha to strengthen inspections and prevent excessive imports disguised as household goods.
