PM Oli and Deuba Discuss Strengthening Government Performance Amid Political Tensions

Kathmandu: Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba held a meeting at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Monday, focusing on how to make the coalition government more effective and unified.
According to PM Oli’s press coordinator Ramsharan Bajgain, the leaders discussed ways to strengthen the government and enhance its performance amid increasing scrutiny from both inside and outside the ruling coalition.
The meeting comes at a time when Maoist Centre Chair and opposition leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has been openly suggesting the possibility of a government change. However, Baluwatar sources have downplayed such claims, describing the Oli-Deuba dialogue as a routine discussion between coalition partners.
“It is natural for leaders of a joint government to meet and consult. Today’s hour-long conversation focused on how to make the government’s work more effective,” Bajgain said.
Despite the reassurances, internal criticisms have been mounting. Just hours before the meeting, Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa criticized the government’s lack of momentum and failure to meet public expectations.
“When the two largest parties came together to form a government, there were hopes of constitutional amendments and significant governance reforms,” Thapa said. “I personally stayed outside the government thinking I could contribute to its success—but it hasn’t delivered the desired pace.”
He warned that if the government doesn’t change gears soon, public frustration could deepen further.
