Kathmandu: Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed strong support for the ongoing teachers’ protest in the capital. Speaking at the 77th anniversary of the Communist Party of Nepal at Paris Danda, Prachanda urged educators to continue their movement patiently, accusing the government of betraying their trust multiple times.

Prachanda Urges Teachers Protest for Education Act

Since Chaitra 20 (April 2), teachers have been staging demonstrations in Kathmandu, demanding the long-delayed School Education Act. Despite repeated negotiations between the government and teacher representatives, no solution has been reached.

Prachanda stressed that teachers are only seeking the implementation of past agreements. “You have protested multiple times, signed multiple agreements—and been deceived each time. This time, we must not allow that to happen again,” he said. “We all have a responsibility.”

Criticism of Oli-Led Government

The Maoist Centre chair took aim at the KP Sharma Oli–led government, saying it has shown irresponsibility toward teachers. He pointed to the recent resignation of Education Minister Bidhya Bhattarai—a UML leader—as further evidence of instability.

“This government won’t be able to carry its own burden. It will collapse under it,” Prachanda declared. “We still hope it comes to its senses.”

He also accused Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of being “highly negative” toward teachers’ concerns. “Teachers are not asking for anything new. They’re just asking the government to implement what was agreed before,” Prachanda said.

Teachers’ Demands and Political Stakes

Observers note that the teachers’ protest has become a major test for the Oli administration. Failure to address the issue could deepen political instability, especially as public sector employees and unions rally in solidarity. Moreover, the education sector faces uncertainty while students and parents wait for clarity.

The protest highlights the tension between Nepal’s ruling coalition and opposition forces, while also raising questions about the government’s commitment to implementing past agreements.
